 Model Questions

Directions (Q. No. 1-10): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words have been printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

A particular accelerator accelerates subatomic particles and produces collisions between them. The collisions lead to different types of nuclear radiation. The acceleration of the particles is achieved through electromagnetic waves inside the accelerator. Scientists believe that the faster and more energetic these collisions are, the more is revealed about the structure of the matter.

There are two basic types of accelerators - linear and circular. In a linear accelerator the particles move in a straight path in vacuum in a long copper tube and collide with a target. The waves which accelerate the particle are generated by klystrons. Electromagnets confine the particles in a narrow beam. Detectors record the energy released by the collision. There is a famous linear accelerator in California. It is around 3 km long. Linear accelerators are also known as linacs.

The circular accelerator also does the same job but the particle moves in a circular track many times and gains tremendous speed. In each circuit its speed increases. It also uses klystrons and electromagnets. When the particle reaches its highest energy or the desired level of energy, a target is placed in its path. Circular accelerators are also called cyclotrons. The first cyclotron was only four inches in diameter but the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois is situated in almost twenty five square kilometers.
